Synopsis
This study examines the 5th-grade Social Studies textbooks prepared by the Ministry of National Education for secondary and imam hatip secondary schools, specifically comparing the versions used between the 2023–2024 academic years and those designed for the 2024–2025 academic year in accordance with the new Maarif Model. For this purpose, the units and learning areas included in these textbooks were analyzed as part of a document review study. The research was conducted through a qualitative research design using document analysis. The findings indicate that the Social Studies course plays an important role in fostering national consciousness and that this aim is pursued through various means (such as visuals, activities, etc.) presented in the textbooks. In order to identify the elements of social memory related to national consciousness, it was observed that in the 2023–2024 textbook, these concepts were mainly found in the “My Country, My Culture, and My History” unit, while in the 2024–2025 textbook, similar symbols, commemorative days, and notable figures were presented within the “Our Common Heritage” learning area.
