Synopsis

The aim of this study is to reveal the perceptions of 3rd- and 4th-year Social Studies teacher candidates regarding the concept of “social memory” through metaphors. The study was conducted in the 2024–2025 academic year with a total of 45 students — 35 female and 10 male — enrolled in the Department of Social Studies Education at the Faculty of Education, Sivas Cumhuriyet University. The research data were collected by asking participants to complete the sentence: “Social memory is like … because ….” The collected data were analyzed and interpreted using the content analysis technique. As a result of the study, it was found that the teacher candidates developed 33 different metaphors, which were subsequently grouped into seven distinct categories.
