Synopsis
Fairy tales are a literary genre that attracts interest in the social sphere thanks to their intriguing content. In particular, the cultural codes they carry can provide clues about the social structure in which they developed. The aim of this study is to subject the traditional fairy tales Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to a semiotic analysis. The goal of this analysis is to reveal the gender-based codes present in fairy tales. Subsequently, three fairy tales published on Spotify, a digital platform, were also subjected to semiotic analysis for the same purpose. The main findings from the analysis of the six fairy tales show that women are traditionally portrayed as disobedient characters who do not follow the rules, thus causing bad things to happen. Another form of femininity is associated with evil and witchcraft. In these fairy tales, men either save the lives of women who trigger negative events or become victims of their evil deeds. Looking at the fairy tales published on the Spotify platform, it was observed that female characters are generally highlighted for their intelligence, wisdom, and courage. Even in these fairy tales, the rare evil characters are not fixed to specific genders. The findings show that social relations based on inequality, reproduced through traditional fairy tales, can encounter an alternative discourse through digitalization.
