Synopsis

Today, the difficulties in accessing educational services for children with special needs, which touches many segments of our society and is a particularly sensitive issue, emerges as an area that needs to be meticulously considered and solutions developed. Children with special needs are among the most valuable assets of our society. However, health needs have a complex structure for children with special needs, who generally have difficulty adapting to standard services, especially in cases requiring special care. In this adaptation phase, the holistic monitoring model emerges with the research conducted and its usefulness. The concept of the holistic monitoring model first emerged in the 1960s among pediatricians who monitored children with chronic diseases.4 In the report published by the “pediatric practices” commission established by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 1967, it was reported that children with special needs were often monitored by different physicians working independently of each other, and that the lack of cooperation and communication between physicians who monitored created duplications and disruptions in the services provided to children. This was published in a book by the AAP Board in 1992.5 The American Academy of Pediatrics Holistic Monitoring Model Working Group was established in 1992 and in the statement they published in 1992, they requested all pediatricians who provide health services to children with developmental risks and special needs to incorporate the Holistic Monitoring Model into their practices. It is stated in the literature that holistic monitoring model practices increase the quality of life of both themselves and their families by ensuring that each child becomes more mobilized in health care. This constitutes the importance of the holistic monitoring model. The purpose of this study is to address the problems that special needs children who need special health care generally encounter and to provide higher quality health services by addressing them with the holistic monitoring model.
