Synopsis

Bryophytes, consisting of liverworts, hornworts and mosses, form the second largest terrestrial plant group in the world with their primitive structures and rich species diversity. Liverworts is one of the oldest terrestrial plants. They have survived from the middle Devonian periods to the present day. It has been able to survive over such a long period of time and has developed various adaptations while doing so. Thanks to the secondary metabolites they produce, they have been used by people in many different areas from food to medicine, from cosmetics to textiles. Mankind has been in constant contact with plants since its existence. Ethnobotany, an interdisciplinary field, was born in order to examine this relationship. In addition, the science that studies the relationship of bryophytes with humans is called ethnobriology. Studies in the field of ethnobriology and ethnobotany have only been accelerated in recent years, as they are new fields for the scientific world. In this study, information about ethnobotany, ethnobriology, features of liverworts and ethnobriological features of some liverworts distributed in Turkey is presented.
