Synopsis

Disasters place significant strain on health systems due to their sudden and long-term impacts, and they seriously affect access to healthcare services, particularly for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, postpartum women, newborns, and children. Disaster management is not solely an intervention-focused process; rather, it requires a comprehensive approach encompassing risk analysis, preparedness, response, and recovery phases. In this process, disaster awareness and preparedness are among the fundamental elements for ensuring the continuity of healthcare services and reducing adverse health outcomes. The midwifery profession holds a strategic role in all phases of disaster management due to its expertise in women’s, maternal, and child health. Midwives play an active role in identifying risks and planning preventive services before disasters, maintaining safe delivery and emergency obstetric care during disasters, and monitoring maternal and infant health as well as providing psychosocial support after disasters. The fact that disaster conditions can render pregnancy and childbirth traumatic further increases the importance of qualified and empathetic midwifery care. Accordingly, strengthening disaster awareness and preparedness in midwifery education is considered a critical necessity for improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
