Synopsis
Breastfeeding is a multifaceted adaptation process situated at the intersection of the physical and psychological changes a woman experiences in the postpartum period. This book chapter describes the effects of breastfeeding on women's health. The physiological effects of breastfeeding on metabolic and endocrine regulation, cardiovascular system functions, bone metabolism and calcium balance, immune and inflammatory responses, and the uterine involution process are examined in detail. Furthermore, the effects of breastfeeding on maternal mental health are evaluated, and its role in maintaining psychological well-being in the postpartum period is discussed. The chapter addresses individual and environmental factors affecting the breastfeeding process; problems encountered during breastfeeding and approaches to solving these problems are evaluated from a women's health perspective. Finally, the importance of midwives' counseling, monitoring, and support roles in initiating, maintaining, and preventing breastfeeding problems is emphasized, highlighting the crucial role of quality midwifery care in protecting and improving women's health.
