Synopsis

This section examines the positioning of the midwifery profession in the age of artificial intelligence within the context of the digital health ecosystem, clinical decision support systems, and evolving professional roles. It emphasizes that digital health technologies and artificial intelligence are not merely technical tools, but fundamental dynamics that transform midwifery philosophy, care processes, and professional identity. Three primary areas in which digitalization reshapes midwifery care are highlighted: the centralization of data within care, increased accessibility and continuity of care, and the strengthening of women's active participation in care processes. Electronic health records, telemonitoring applications, mobile health technologies, and patient portals are presented as tools that standardize midwifery care, enable early risk identification, and facilitate communication. AI based clinical decision support systems are increasingly used for predicting pregnancy risks, monitoring fetal well-being, assessing labor progress, and forecasting postpartum complications. The section discusses, with support from the literature, the potential of artificial intelligence to reduce clinical errors, improve maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes, and strengthen continuity of care. At the same time, it highlights ethical and practical challenges, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, professional autonomy, digital inequality, and AI literacy. In conclusion, when properly designed, artificial intelligence strengthens the midwifery profession, and the active role of midwives in digital transformation is viewed as fundamental to the future model of care.
