Corporate Entrepreneurship, Firm Performance, and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: An Application on SMEs
Synopsis
Stating that the competition is very harsh and intensive today, wouldn’t be the exaggeration, where the micro and macro environments of businesses are rapidly changing, dynamic, and complex, due to the presence of many known and unknown stakeholders in the business world. Also, customer demands and requests are diversified, and the number of competing businesses established to meet these demands is increasing day by day, adding to the competitive environment. Companies that cannot maintain their competitive advantage simply by preserving products, technology, and even knowledge, must pursue innovation, but its not enough, they must also also incorporate internal strategies to ensure the ongoing pursuit of innovation. At this point, businesses and researchers, who understand the particular importance of corporate entrepreneurship today, pay attention to the premises and results of the concept. Based on this need, this study aims to determine the mediating role of organizational citizenship behavior in the effects of corporate entrepreneurship on firm performance through the means of a proposed model. In this model, the effects of corporate entrepreneurship on the firm's performance, the effects of corporate entrepreneurship on organizational citizenship behavior, the effects of organizational citizenship behavior on the firm's performance, and finally the mediating role of organizational citizenship behavior in the effects of corporate entrepreneurship on the firm's performance are discussed. Another aim of the study is to test whether there is a significant difference between the research variables and demographic factors including gender, age, education, experience, department and position in the business.
The data used in the study was obtained through questionnaires. The research was carried out with the participation of 655 people working in SMEs operating in Adana. Since 47 of the questionnaires were filled out incorrectly or incompletely, 608 questionnaires were evaluated. Validity and reliability analyses, factor analysis, regression analysis, correlation analysis were performed to test hypotheses; t-test and ANOVA analyses were performed on the research data to investigate the differentiation of research variables according to demographic variables.
The research revealed that corporate entrepreneurship affects firm performance positively, and organizational citizenship behavior plays a partial mediating role in this effect. According to the results of the analysis made on demographic variables, it can be observed that corporate entrepreneurship differs according to education and position in business; that organizational citizenship behavior differs according to age and experience; and that firm performance differs according to experience, department, and position in the business. The results of the analyses supported the hypotheses of the study. The results obtained as a result of the research were evaluated within the framework of the literature and suggestions were made for future studies.
