Synopsis

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between pre-service teachers' communication skills and their attitudes towards public speaking. The study was conducted on a total of 322 students (234 women and 88 men) studying at the Kazım Karabekir Faculty of Education, Atatürk University, Erzurum, during the 2025-2026 academic year. A correlational survey model, a quantitative research method, was used in the study. To determine the communication skills and public speaking attitudes of pre-service teachers, the "Communication Skills Assessment Scale" developed by Karagöz and Kösterelioğlu (2008) and the "Public Speaking Attitude Scale" developed by Brown and Welch (2022) and adapted into Turkish by Aydoğan and Çelik (2024) were used. An independent samples t-test was applied to determine the differences between female and male participants in the analysis of the data. Pearson correlation analysis was applied to determine the relationship between age and communication skills and public speaking attitudes, and the relationship between communication skills and public speaking attitudes. The data were analyzed using a significance level of p<.050. No significant differences were found between male and female prospective teachers in communication skills and public speaking attitudes. No significant relationship was found between the age of prospective teachers and their communication skills. A significant positive correlation was found between age and the "entertainment" sub-dimension of public speaking attitudes, and a significant negative correlation was found between age and the "anxiety" sub-dimension. A significant positive correlation was also found between the "respect" sub-dimension of communication skills and the "importance" sub-dimension of public speaking attitudes, and between the "barriers" sub-dimension of communication skills and the "entertainment" sub-dimension of public speaking attitudes. Based on these results, it is suggested that improving prospective teachers' communication skills also positively impacts their public speaking attitudes. Therefore, it is recommended that appropriate courses, talks, or panels on the importance of communication be organized to enhance students' communication skills during the educational process. Further studies are suggested to examine the impact of different variables on prospective teachers' communication skills and public speaking attitudes.
