Synopsis

This chapter examines the conceptual foundations of literary tourism—situated within special-interest tourism—against the backdrop of a global shift from mass tourism towards more individualised, experience-driven forms of travel. Literary tourism encompasses a broad spectrum of motivations, including visiting the birthplace or childhood environment of an author, experiencing locations depicted in poems or literary works from a new perspective, or paying tribute at writers’ graves or commemorative monuments. As a subfield of cultural heritage tourism, it also involves travel to places associated with authors, the settings in which their works were produced, and the geographical sites referenced in fictional narratives. To explore the potential of literary tourism in Türkiye, this study undertook an extensive review of the existing literature and systematically organised the findings. Within this scope, general literary museums, author-specific museums and fictional literature museums were classified and presented in tabular form, while additional attractions—such as literary quarters, literature-themed accommodation facilities and literary festivals—were examined in detail. The literature indicates that the notable increase in museum establishments after the 2000s has strengthened destination appeal and that Türkiye demonstrates significant promise as a literary tourism destination. Moreover, literary tourism offers special-interest travellers opportunities for direct engagement with texts, authors, and related sites, thereby enhancing experiential depth. Overall, the findings suggest that literary tourism contributes to the preservation of cultural assets, facilitates unique experiential encounters and generates economic benefits at the local level; collectively, these features underscore its relevance to broader sustainable development objectives.
