Synopsis

The book in your hands presents readers with a comprehensive study examining the multi-layered relationship between political ideologies and communication practices in Turkey, focusing on discourse, perception and power. Political ideologies gain meaning and are reproduced in the social sphere not only through intellectual systems or programmatic texts, but also through language, symbols, narratives and communication strategies. In this respect, political communication emerges as a fundamental arena where ideologies gain visibility, produce legitimacy, and structure power relations.

Centring on Turkey's unique historical, social, and political context, the book examines the discursive construction of different ideological positions, the forms of communication established with the masses, and perception management processes from a multidimensional perspective. The political communication practices of democracy, nationalism, conservatism, social democracy, liberalism, and other ideological orientations are addressed in the context of election campaigns, leadership discourses, media representations, and new communication technologies. Thus, the analysis extends beyond what ideologies ‘say’ to include how they ‘say it’ and how this discourse shapes its social counterpart.

The studies included in the book discuss how national and local power is established and maintained through discourse, while also drawing attention to the transformative power of political communication. Changes in media structures, digitalisation, and the rise of social media have expanded the circulation speed and sphere of influence of ideological discourses, creating new breaking points in the construction of political perception. By evaluating the political practices of this transformation, the book sheds light on contemporary Turkish politics.

In this respect, the study aims to serve as an important reference source for academics, researchers and students working in the fields of political science, communication sciences and sociology, as well as contributing to all readers who wish to understand how political ideologies gain meaning through communication in Turkey.
