Synopsis

Since the second half of the 20th century, increasing population movements worldwide have made migration a universal problem. In this context, host countries have had to face a wide range of problems for migrant individuals, from their cultural integration and education to their economic participation and health needs. Education is a concept that deserves attention because it is both a means of efficient use of human resources and one of the most effective tools for social cohesion and well-being. Indeed, host countries aim to ensure the cultural integration of migrant individuals through education, to improve their language acquisition and usage skills, and to train them as future workforce. Migration is a significant risk factor that can affect students' educational lives in multifaceted ways, leading to disruption of academic continuity, learning losses, and a decline in school performance. While education is a powerful tool for the integration of migrant individuals into the host society, migrant students face various difficulties in accessing and participating in education. This situation forces education systems to develop more inclusive policies from a structural and pedagogical perspective, but significant challenges also arise in the implementation process. In Turkey, language proficiency, psychosocial support, and teachers' multicultural competencies stand out as determining factors in the academic and social integration of immigrant students. Due to structural differences between education systems, recognizing prior learning, strengthening family involvement, and creating an inclusive school climate increase students' adaptation and motivation. In this process, cooperation between the Ministry of National Education, local governments, civil society, and international organizations plays a critical role in terms of the effectiveness and sustainability of services provided to immigrant students.
