Synopsis

Unemployment is a fundamental problem in the labor market, but it also represents a multifaceted phenomenon encompassing economic, social, and psychological dimensions. Current unemployment data reveals that the unemployment rate among young people is higher than the overall unemployment rate. In particular, young people who are not included in the workforce and education system indicate the existence of a idle labor force capacity. This situation is structural in nature, resulting not only in potential job losses but also in significant consequences at both individual and societal levels. In this context, young people who are neither in employment, education nor training (NEET), which has become a significant socio-economic issue in recent years and is the subject of study, represent a sub-group of the disadvantaged youth population. The number of this group in Türkiye is steadily increasing and constitutes one of the key focus areas of youth policies. This trend points to a significant structural problem that is hindering Türkiye's demographic opportunity window, given its young population. This study examines the concepts of unemployment, youth unemployment and NEET, aiming to reveal the structure and significance of youth unemployment and emphasising its importance in terms of social policy. Within this context, a general assessment has been made regarding the current situation of NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) youth in the labor market.
