Synopsis
Writers and poets have utilized proverbs, idioms and kelâm-ı kibârs in a great extent in almost every period and work of literature, in order to enhance and enrich their narrative. Proverbs are didactic, wise sayings which root back to the old experiences of the people; whereas idioms are phrases that define a situation with s figurative meaning, rather than having a didactic worry. The poets of Turkish Islamic literature took advantage of proverbs and idioms in order to tell a lot of things with few words and make their expressions more effective. In the light of this context, the place of proverbs and idioms in common culture is prominent. Bayburtlu Şevket Bilâlî, who is a XIXth century poet, is also among those who used these concepts in his poetry with the influence of the tradition. Because he is a sufi poet, in order to spread his knowledge to the masses in its purposes, he preferred a simple narration. Hence, in Bayburtlu Şevket Bilâlî’s Diwan, 3 proverbs, 49 idioms and 8 kelâm-ı kibârs have been observed. The aim of this work is to unearth the proverbs and idioms used by Bayburtlu Şevket Bilâlî in his poems.
