Synopsis

This study analyzes the depiction of female athletes as role models via the lenses of gender, sports sociology, and media representation dynamics. Sport serves as a prominent domain for the cultivation of the physique, rivalry, achievement, and national identity in modern civilizations. The prominence of women in this domain indicates not merely athletic achievement but also a cultural shift wherein femininity, authority, physicality, and societal roles are reinvented. In the framework of social learning theory, the role model effect functions through mechanisms of similarity, accessibility, and value congruence, significantly influencing the self-efficacy, body image, and self-construction of adolescent girls specifically. The influence of role models is amplified or diminished by the media representation of female athletes. Traditional media frequently depicts female athletes through aesthetic, emotional, or "exceptional achievement" lenses, whereas social media enables athletes to craft their own narratives using subjective, impactful, and collective language. Nonetheless, digital media presents threats of cyberstalking and bodily surveillance. Comparative research of women's football, volleyball, and individual sports reveals that the influence of role models is contingent upon the cultural orientation of each sport. The longevity of female athletes' role model influence relies on the comprehensive execution of ethical media portrayal, effective public relations management, value-aligned sponsorship, and digital security protocols.
