Synopsis

Sports tourism is considered a multifaceted type of tourism, encompassing economic, social, cultural, and environmental dimensions, which result from the interaction between the sports and tourism sectors. In this context, sports tourism refers to trips taken by individuals to participate in sporting activities, attend sporting events, or experience elements of a sporting heritage. Historically, sports and travel have developed in tandem throughout human history; since ancient times, sporting events have facilitated social mobility and cultural exchange. Sports tourism is examined under three main types: active sports tourism, event sports tourism, and nostalgia sports tourism. Active sports tourism involves individuals' direct participation in sporting activities. Event sports tourism, on the other hand, involves travel for the purpose of watching national and international sporting events. Nostalgia sports tourism, ultimately, involves visits focused on sports museums, historical facilities, and the preservation of sporting heritage. This diversity demonstrates that sports tourism is a strategic area that broadens the range of tourist products offered by destinations. Sports tourism management encompasses fundamental management processes, including strategic management and planning, marketing and branding, digital marketing, human resources management, financial management, and quality and customer satisfaction. Sustainability, interdisciplinary collaboration, and stakeholder participation are particularly crucial for the long-term success of sports tourism businesses.
