Synopsis

Climate change has evolved from being solely an environmental issue into a global crisis that transforms many aspects of health, the economy, and social life. Rising temperatures, air pollution, the depletion of water resources, food insecurity, and the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters are among the major risk factors that directly affect the living conditions of societies. However, the impacts of climate change do not emerge equally across all segments of society; existing socioeconomic inequalities play a significant role in shaping how these effects are distributed. In this context, gender inequalities offer a critical perspective for understanding the impacts of climate change. Women are among the groups that are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, particularly due to caregiving responsibilities, livelihood strategies dependent on natural resources, inequalities in access to healthcare services, and limited economic resources. Rising temperatures, air pollution, and environmental stressors may affect different stages of the female life cycle, including fertility, pregnancy outcomes, the postpartum period, and menopause. In addition, the social and economic transformations caused by climate change directly influence women’s employment opportunities, educational prospects, and participation in social life. For this reason, climate change should not be considered solely as an environmental problem; it is also a multidimensional public health issue that must be addressed within the framework of health inequalities, social justice, and sustainable development.

This book, titled “Impacts of Climate Change on Women’s Health,” aims to examine the relationship between climate change and women’s health from a multidimensional perspective. The chapters included in the book explore the social dimensions of climate change, gender inequalities, its effects on women’s mental health, risks associated with reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes, reflections during the menopausal period, and the impacts on women’s socioeconomic lives in light of scientific evidence. The primary aim of this book is to draw attention to the relationship between climate change and women’s health and to contribute to the scientific literature in this field. Intended as a comprehensive reference source for researchers, academics, health professionals, and policymakers working in the field of health sciences, this work also seeks to make visible the intersection points between the climate crisis and gender inequalities.

We would like to thank all the chapter authors who contributed to the preparation of this book for their valuable efforts, and we hope that this work will inspire new research in the field of climate change and women’s health.
