Synopsis

The rapid development of digital technologies has significantly transformed individuals’ daily lives, working practices, and social interactions. The widespread expansion of internet infrastructure, the constant accessibility of mobile devices, and the integration of online platforms into everyday life have substantially increased the amount of time individuals spend in digital environments. While this transformation has facilitated access to information and enhanced efficiency and communication processes, it has also introduced new sources of psychological pressure, such as the expectation of constant connectivity and the continuous flow of digital interaction. In this context, the concept of digital burnout has emerged as an important phenomenon describing the mental, emotional, and behavioral exhaustion that results from intensive exposure to digital technologies. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of digital burnout within the framework of the human-centered perspective of Industry 5.0, the concept of digital flourishing, and the positive technology approach. The study evaluates both the burnout risks that digital technologies may create for individuals and their potential to support personal development. Within this framework, two main approaches are discussed: a preventive approach aimed at reducing digital burnout and a supportive approach that emphasizes the role of technology in enhancing individuals’ psychological well-being, productivity, and social connectedness. The findings suggest that evaluating the impact of digital technologies solely through the lens of risk and stress is insufficient. When designed and used according to human-centered principles, digital technologies can function not only as sources of strain but also as tools that promote individual development and well-being in the digital age.
