Synopsis

Sustainability should be addressed in the teaching and application processes of product design not only from its environmental and economic dimensions, but also from its subjective and emotional aspects. This chapter explores the concept of sustainability through the lens of emotion, design, and technology, investigating the emotional sustainability approach. While the traditional understanding of sustainability often focuses on physical elements such as material selection and product lifespan, the emotional, social, and cultural needs of users are often overlooked. However, balancing both functional and non-functional needs in the design process strengthens the bond between the product and the user and extends the product's life cycle. Emotional sustainability not only offers a productive experience to the user but also has the potential to transform consumption habits by creating a sense of meaning and belonging. Especially in today's world of intense digital technology, integrating emotional sustainability into design processes is necessary to promote healthier and more sustainable digital lifestyles. In this context, this chapter aims to contribute to the literature and the industry by offering various suggestions to individuals and businesses on emotional sustainability through technology.
