Hotel fires stand out as a significant research area in disaster and crisis management literature due to their high potential for loss of life and devastating impact on the tourism sector. Historically, very large and destructive hotel fires such as Daeyeonggak (1971), Winecoff (1946), and Dupont Plaza (1986), along with the more recent Bolu Kartalkaya Grand Kartal Hotel fire, although occurring in different periods and under different conditions, offer examples suitable for comparative examination within the context of crisis management and disaster response. The aim of this study is to examine these cases from the perspective of disaster and crisis management, revealing similarities and differences in terms of fire safety, crisis management, evacuation processes, and communication strategies, thereby preventing similar potential future incidents or reducing their destructiveness. The study employs a literature review method, compiling data by examining official reports, press releases, and academic literature. The findings reveal similar negligences in hotel fire incidents resulting in significant loss of life, with a few exceptions. Generally, inadequate safety infrastructure leads to high casualties, and deficiencies observed in evacuation and crisis communication also increase the loss of life. In conclusion, it is understood that hotel fires are not only a safety issue but also a strategic matter in terms of disaster and crisis management and tourism sustainability. Accordingly, it is recommended to develop stronger crisis communication protocols, regular evacuation drills, and disaster management policies specific to the tourism sector.
