Synopsis

This study examines the position of graphic design within visual culture. Graphic design is approached as a communicative practice that contributes to the construction and organization of visual language and to the direction of meaning. In this context, the study examines the role of graphic design in the production and circulation of cultural codes in contemporary society. The research is based on a theoretical evaluation grounded in a literature review. Representation theory, the consumer society approach, and discussions on digital media are addressed together in order to analyze the processes of meaning production in graphic design. Drawing on the understanding of representation developed by Stuart Hall and the visual culture approach of Nicholas Mirzoeff, the study discusses how design structures signs and contributes to the formation of social perception. Within the framework of consumer society, the functioning of design products through their sign value is evaluated in relation to the production of desire, identity, and status. With digitalization, the increasing speed of visual production and circulation has strengthened the position of graphic design within visual culture. As a result, graphic design is positioned as an active field that participates in the formation of contemporary visual culture and shapes cultural meanings. The study demonstrates that graphic design contributes to cultural meaning production and has the potential to transform these meanings.
