Synopsis
Nursing students establish therapeutic relationships with patients and, as future nursing professionals, they need to receive education in effective communication and empathy skills. The aim of this systematic review is to reveal the effect of evidence-based interventions aimed at improving the communication and empathy skills of nursing students. The research covers experimental, randomized controlled research and studies including mixed interventions conducted between 2016 and 2026 to improve communication skills and empathy skills among nursing students. The study was conducted with theses whose full texts were accessible from the database of the Council of Higher Education Documentation, Publication and Department. In the research, 1760 theses related to communication skills and empathy skills were reached. From these theses, 150 studies conducted in the field of nursing were identified, and 10 theses including intervention programs were examined. In the research, the search was conducted by making combinations with the terms “iletişim becerileri,” “communication skills,” “empati,” “empathy,” and “hemşirelik,” “nursing.” A total of 10 theses meeting the evaluation criteria were examined according to PICO(S) (P: population), (I: interventions), (C: comparators), (O: outcomes), (S: study designs). Among the theses included in the research scope, doctoral theses (n=9) were encountered most frequently, while master’s theses (n=1) were encountered very rarely. It was determined that the theses were mostly in 2024 (n=3), mostly in the Department of Nursing (n=6), mostly randomized controlled experimental research (n=8), and that two studies were conducted using mixed methods. It was observed that the applied interventions increased the knowledge and skill levels of students and had a positive effect on the development of students’ empathy with patients and patients’ relatives, problem-solving, initiating and maintaining communication, self-confidence, and assertiveness skills. It is recommended that intervention studies that integrate innovative methods aimed at improving communication and empathy skills among nursing students into educational processes and that evaluate the effects of qualitative studies be increased.
