Synopsis

This study aims to examine the phenomenon of hurry-up syndrome in organizations within a conceptual framework. Increasing global competition, the acceleration of work processes through digitalization, and performance evaluation systems based primarily on time-oriented indicators have contributed to the institutionalization of constant urgency and time pressure in many organizations. In this context, hurry-up syndrome refers not simply to the quantity of work but to an organizational mode of functioning in which tasks are systematically framed as “urgent,” time allocated for planning and reflection is gradually reduced, and performance is largely evaluated through speed-related indicators. Drawing on related concepts in the literature such as social jet lag, burnout, workaholism, and managerial pathologies, this study discusses the theoretical foundations of hurry-up syndrome. Furthermore, the sectoral dynamics of the phenomenon are explored, particularly in industries characterized by intense time pressure, including healthcare, services, and banking. The literature indicates that chronic time pressure may negatively affect employees’ psychological well-being, attention, and performance, while at the organizational level it may undermine quality, safety, and innovation capacity. Accordingly, managing hurry-up syndrome requires more than individual time-management interventions; it calls for reconsideration of structural elements such as performance measurement systems, leadership approaches, job design, and human resource policies. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive analytical perspective emphasizing the need to balance organizational speed and agility with employee well-being and sustainable performance.
