Synopsis

This study aims to examine the relationship between cooking skills and the social value attributed to women, based on their everyday experiences. The sample consisted of 15 women from diverse professions with varying levels of cooking proficiency. Data were collected using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which allows participants to express their experiences from their own perspectives while enabling the researcher to interpret these experiences within their social context. During analysis, participant statements were coded into sub-themes, which were then grouped under broader themes. Findings indicate that cooking is not merely a technical skill for women, but a domain where social values and norms become visible. Participants reported that the responsibility for cooking is intertwined with family roles, praise, expectations, and societal evaluations, and that this process exposes women’s labor to visibility as well as normative pressures. The study reveals how women experience cooking both in the context of domestic roles and as a measure of social value, highlighting how societal praise and expectations shape their experiences.
