The Use of Augmented Reality in Turkish Language Teaching with AI-Supported Activities

Synopsis

This study examines the use of augmented reality technology with artificial intelligence-supported activities in the process of teaching and learning Turkish. Technological developments have made the use of digital materials, educational software and hardware, and artificial intelligence important and necessary in learning and teaching processes. Augmented reality, which is based on combining the real world with virtual content, is one of the most up-to-date tools used in education. Augmented reality has a structure that is suitable for the content of Turkish lessons and supports the development of the four basic language skills. Its visual and auditory nature, its ability to facilitate the teaching of abstract topics, and its support for active learning have made it possible to use it in all skill areas of Turkish teaching. In this regard, there is a need for high-quality activities based on the use of augmented reality technology in the Turkish lesson process. In Turkish teaching, artificial intelligence tools can be used to design economical, original, and aesthetically pleasing activities that offer a personalized learning experience in line with the objectives and outcomes. ChatGPT has a highly functional structure with the products it produces, creating an effective and efficient learning environment and laying the groundwork for developing students' language skills and enriching their learning experiences. In this regard, ChatGPT was chosen as the artificial intelligence tool when creating activities in this study. When developing activities, guidelines were used to define the scope of the activity in terms of grade level, language skills, learning outcomes, duration, etc. There are numerous augmented reality tools that teachers can utilize in the teaching and learning process. This study utilized the widely used augmented reality tools QuiverVision and Merge Cube Object Viewer. At the end of the study, the activities “Animated Characters: A Creative Writing Journey with Augmented Reality” and “What Came Out of the AR Box? – Impromptu Speaking Workshop” were developed. It is believed that the activities conducted to improve speaking and writing skills will make the learning environment enjoyable, enable students to learn by doing and experiencing, and allow the teacher to effectively fulfill their guiding role in the activities.
