Synopsis

Breastfeeding is not only a feeding process; it is an action triggered by neuroendocrine mechanisms that can have various effects on the female body. Breastfeeding is considered a sacred act in many societies. This socio-cultural context can create a barrier for women to express their experiences of sexual pleasure during the breastfeeding process. Orgasmic breastfeeding has become a topic that is avoided due to women feeling ashamed of experiencing sexual pleasure while breastfeeding, and it has been disregarded in sexual health. The effect of the oxytocin hormone, triggered by the constant stimulation of the nipple during breastfeeding, can increase sexual arousal and desire, leading to uterine contractions. These neuroendocrine processes can transform breastfeeding from not only a feeding act into a silent pleasure experience and bring it to a position where orgasm can be achieved. Studies have shown that some breastfeeding women describe the experience as erotic and report sensations similar to orgasm during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding women have shared their comments and experiences on this topic on numerous forums and blogs. In this book chapter, a different perspective on the orgasmic dimension of breastfeeding is presented by examining literature data alongside the comments of breastfeeding women on digital platforms (Ekşi Sözlük, Uludağ Sözlük, kizlarsoruyor.com and annelertoplandik.com) regarding the sexual pleasure and orgasm experienced during breastfeeding.
