An Empirical Analysis of the Effects of Fees and Commissions Charged to Customers in the Turkish Banking Sector on Customer Behavior

Synopsis

This study is an empirical investigation examining the effects of fees and commissions charged to customers on customer attitudes, perceptions, and evaluations of banking services in the Turkish banking sector. As key actors in the economy, banks collect various fees and commissions in return for the financial intermediation services they provide. In order to protect financial consumers, the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) has introduced regulations limiting the fees and commissions that may be charged under specific categories. In this study, a face-to-face survey consisting of 30 questions was administered to 100 participants aged between 18 and 67 residing in Istanbul. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis and chi-square tests, and comparative evaluations were conducted according to participants’ educational levels. The findings indicate that the majority of participants perceive banking fees and commissions as excessive and believe that current practices do not fully comply with the principle of fairness. Furthermore, statistically significant differences were identified in certain evaluations based on gender. The study offers recommendations aimed at improving financial literacy, promoting the use of alternative banking channels, and enhancing transparency and standardization in banking fee and commission practices.
