The Epithet of Taste: Interpreting Gastronomic Values Through the Lens of Cultural Identity in Gaziantep

Synopsis

One of the first things that comes to mind when you think of Gaziantep is gastronomy. This study aims to reveal the role of gastronomic nicknames used in Gaziantep province, which are a part of the collective memory, in the transmission of cultural heritage. To achieve the research objective, secondary data was initially utilized, and gastronomic nicknames found in all relevant documents and social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, Ekşi Sözlük) and websites between April 1st and April 30th, 2025, were examined using the keywords “Gaziantep”, “Nickname”, “Antep Nicknames”, and “Gaziantep Nicknames”. Word cloud analysis was performed on the obtained data based on frequency. Subsequently, interviews were conducted between February 10, 2026 and April 1, 2026 with individuals who had been living in Gaziantep for many years. Content analysis was applied to the obtained data, taking into consideration its suitability for the purpose of the study. The analyses revealed that nicknames related to gastronomy are also significant among the nicknames used in Gaziantep.  According to the data obtained, it was concluded that in Gaziantep, elements of local culture are used extensively in social life, gastronomic nicknames are a cultural value, gastronomy is kept alive not only in the context of cuisine but also through colloquial language, and gastronomic nicknames can be important in highlighting the city's culture.  Based on these findings, various suggestions have been presented to ensure the sustainability of gastronomic nicknames as a cultural value.
