Synopsis

Access to adequate sanitation and hygiene services, as well as the safe disposal of solid waste, is essential for public health protection. This importance becomes more pronounced during environmental disasters and public health emergencies.

During disasters, existing waste collection and disposal systems may be disrupted, while the disaster itself may generate additional waste. If solid waste is not managed promptly and effectively, it may lead to significant health risks and further deteriorate the well-being of affected communities. This chapter summarizes key considerations for solid waste management during and immediately after disasters.
