Synopsis

Tourism has long been evaluated in terms of its contributions to economic growth, employment, foreign exchange earnings and regional development. However, the sector’s focus on quantitative growth has also brought about social and ecological problems such as carbon emissions, water and energy consumption, waste generation, biodiversity loss, overcrowding, housing problems, declining quality of local life and inequalities in income distribution. This situation indicates that economic performance indicators are insufficient on their own to measure tourism success. Therefore, it reveals that the success of the tourism sector should also be evaluated in the context of human well-being, ecological integrity and the long-term resilience of destinations. On the other hand, although the sustainable tourism approach provides an important framework for reducing the negative impacts of tourism and balancing resource use, it may remain limited in transforming the existing growth-oriented tourism system. This is because traditional sustainability practices mostly focus on reducing the negative impacts of tourism. At this point, there is a need for contemporary approaches that go beyond preserving the existing system and aim to rebuild it. Regenerative tourism and doughnut economics, among these contemporary approaches, propose evaluating the social, economic and ecological dimensions of tourism activities from a holistic perspective. Based on the relationship between regenerative tourism and doughnut economics, this chapter provides a theoretical framework for how destinations can be transformed into more balanced, just and resilient living spaces within social and ecological boundaries.
