Synopsis
Adolescence is a sensitive developmental period encompassing the ages of 10–19 years, during which individuals transition from childhood to adulthood. During this period, adolescents undergo physiological, biological, psychological, and social development. In adolescent girls, the onset of the menstrual cycle occurs with puberty, a stage marked by sexual maturation. During this process, adolescent girls are exposed to multifaceted stressors, including hormonal changes, alterations in body image, identity development, the need for social acceptance, emotional fluctuations, academic expectations, and gender-related and societal roles. Stress is defined as a biopsychosocial response to internal or external stimuli. Since the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis has not yet fully matured during adolescence, conditions such as menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea, and mood fluctuations are more frequently observed, and adolescents may exhibit heightened sensitivity in their responses to these conditions. However, the level of stress experienced varies among individuals. While some adolescents perceive this period as a natural developmental process, others may experience stress due to factors such as insufficient knowledge, social taboos, cultural beliefs, and the responsibilities and roles imposed upon them. Menstrual stress is a psychophysiological condition that encompasses emotional, cognitive, and behavioral difficulties associated with hormonal changes, together with physical symptoms such as dysmenorrhea occurring during the menstrual cycle. Among the non-pharmacological methods used in the management of menstrual stress, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) has been identified as an effective approach for coping with stress. During EFT practice, individuals focus on the emotions or thoughts causing distress while gently tapping specific energy points with their fingertips. Within midwifery care, the integration of EFT through a holistic approach may contribute to enhancing adolescents’ stress-coping abilities and promoting menstrual health.
