Synopsis

The importance of this research stems from the fact that hydrogen energy has come back to the agenda as a sustainable solution with the global population growth and the increasing inadequacy of existing energy resources. Increasing environmental concerns and climate change, especially since the late 1990s, have encouraged the use of renewable energy sources; in this direction, hydrogen has come to the fore as a strategic energy carrier that attracts attention with its low emission, high energy density and versatile usage areas. This study aims to analyse Türkiye's transition to hydrogen economy in the context of its renewable energy potential, geopolitical position and existing logistics infrastructure. Within the scope of the research, the adequacy of Turkey's current energy policies in terms of hydrogen energy production and logistics and whether its geopolitical position provides a strategic advantage are addressed within the framework of two main research questions. Based on a literature review, the analysis examined Türkiye's potential for solar, wind, geothermal and hydroelectric energy resources in detail, as well as concrete strategic initiatives such as the Hydrogen Valley Project. The findings reveal that Türkiye has significant opportunities for hydrogen production and distribution. In conclusion, Türkiye needs to develop a holistic, long-term and implementable national strategy for hydrogen technologies in order to increase its energy supply security and achieve its 2053 net zero emission targets.
