Anatomy of Dangerous Behaviour in Organisations.
Synopsis
This chapter explores a frequently overlooked yet increasingly influential phenomenon of workplace gossip in organizational life. While often regarded as trivial or an inevitable form of informal communication, gossip can transform into a dangerous behavior under certain conditions, posing serious risks to institutions. The chapter examines gossip's definition and functional aspects but focuses primarily on its harmful effects on organizational trust, communication, culture, and employee well-being. Through illustrative examples, the chapter highlights how gossip is intertwined with misinformation, loss of trust, toxic culture formation, mobbing, and organizational cynicism. External consequences, such as damage to corporate reputation, are also analyzed. Structural factors like uncertainty, communication breakdowns, digitalization, and power struggles are identified as core contributors to the spread of gossip. Visual exhibitions are used to depict how gossip travels through informal social networks within institutions. Rather than being merely an interpersonal issue, gossip reflects broader organizational dynamics and leadership styles. Therefore, effective gossip management requires transparent communication channels and the cultivation of an ethical workplace culture. This chapter aims to provide managers, researchers, and HR professionals with a comprehensive framework to understand the risks of workplace gossip and implement preventive strategies.
