Synopsis

Nutrition is the intake of a certain amount of macro and micronutrients at certain times in order for people to meet their daily energy needs and to sustain their lives. Sports nutrition, on the other hand, is a special form of nutrition to increase the performance of the athlete and to protect against general health and injuries. The nutritional habits and patterns of athletes are parallel to the sports branches they practice. Each sports branch has different nutritional requirements. Athletes can develop different dietary patterns individually. Athletes' positional differences, body types, body mass index (BMI) levels affect their diet. Proper nutrition and management in athletes have positive psychological and physiologic effects on athletes. The sports branch and the required calorie amounts are also important in the nutrition of athletes. Athletes should pay attention to their nutrition programs to stay in competition, to be able to do high-level sports, to keep their performance at the highest point, to stay at an optimal level after development and to avoid injuries because sports in the period we live in involves high competition. Due to the intense training and competition environment, athletes may sometimes experience disruptions in their nutrition programs, in which case they turn to fast and alternative ways. With alternative diets, athletes are expected to feel better physically and at the same time their bodies are expected to respond better to alternative approaches. Regardless of the sport, there are intense and competitive fixtures in a season and alternative nutrition models are applied by dietitians in these fixtures. Athletes need to recover quickly, increase their performance and stay in a competitive environment. Athletes cannot meet this situation only with training, so the importance of alternative sports nutrition is very high today. When the literature is reviewed, there are not many studies on alternative nutrition in athletes. For this reason, alternative sports nutrition approaches were examined in this study.
