Synopsis
In recent years, it has become a necessity to take precautions against the quality of life with its unique structures, architecture, culture, local cuisine, historical identity, natural resources, which are seriously under threat in cities. The Cittaslow movement, which means “slow city” and emerged in Italy approximately twenty-six years ago, has emerged as a reaction to these threats with its 305 members today. For this purpose, the Cittaslow movement works towards a series of goals aimed at developing cities by protecting their local identities and improving their quality of life. In light of the movements that emerged as a reaction to the negativities caused by globalization, Köyceğiz, which received the title of slow city in 2019 as the 14th member of Cittaslow in Turkey, was discussed. In this context, globalization was introduced and the formations of the slow food and slow city movements were examined. In the next section, the cittaslow membership criteria were examined, and the natural, human, social, economic and historical structures and tourism potential of the Köyceğiz district were discussed. In the last section, the data obtained from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Turkish Statistical Institute for Köyceğiz were investigated and evaluated.
