Synopsis

This study aims to examine the ethical issues arising from the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies in working life. Real-world cases such as AI bias in Amazon's recruitment system, Tesla's automation-driven layoffs, and privacy breaches by AI-powered tracking systems highlight the impact of these technologies on fundamental ethical principles like impartiality, equality, and data privacy. As part of the study, a survey was conducted with 50 industrial engineers working in various sectors to quantitatively determine their perceptions, attitudes, and awareness levels regarding the ethical dimensions of AI and automation. The findings indicate that participants generally possess basic knowledge about these technologies, have witnessed their integration into work processes, and harbor significant concerns about the ethical risks posed by systems that fully replace human decision-making. Especially impacts on employment, lack of algorithmic transparency, data security, and doubts about equality principles emerged as prominent ethical concerns. Participants emphasized that for AI to be used within ethical boundaries, employees must be involved in the process, independent audit mechanisms should be established, the principle of transparency must be ensured, and ethical awareness training should be widely disseminated. These results clearly demonstrate the importance of human-centered, accountable, and sustainable technology applications, particularly within the industrial engineering profession. This study fills a significant gap in the field by quantitatively assessing the level of awareness regarding the ethical use of AI and automation.
