Synopsis

Pregnancy is a physiological event that can be experienced by any woman of reproductive age. Although it is physiologically the woman who undergoes pregnancy, close individuals in her environment are also affected by this process. In addition to the physiological changes that occur in the woman during pregnancy, the pregnant woman, her spouse, and other family members experience certain psychological and social changes and feel the need to adapt to them. Therefore, the pregnancy period can be a time of crisis for both the woman and her family. In Turkey, mothers who give birth are generally discharged from the hospital within 24 hours. This duration is not sufficient to support the mother in adapting to her new condition during the postpartum period. On the first day after birth, the mother is in close interaction with healthcare personnel, and the care she receives from healthcare providers—especially midwives—plays a crucial role in her adaptation to the postpartum period, alongside the support from her family. Nurses/midwives are present with mothers in primary healthcare institutions and in prenatal and postpartum clinics. Adaptation problems in the postpartum period typically occur after mothers are discharged from the healthcare institution (around 4–6 weeks postpartum). During this period at home, symptoms may go unnoticed, and early diagnosis may not be possible. Therefore, it is important to assess the mother for risk factors after birth and to take the necessary precautions in the early period.
