Synopsis

The FAO Food Price Index reached its peak at 144.5 points in 2022 and subsequently declined to around 120 points in the following years. The sharp increase in 2022 reflects not only the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic but also the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war on food commodity prices. This rise has been observed through both direct channels, such as food supply shocks, and indirect channels, including changes in input prices. Energy price fluctuations caused by the Ukraine-Russia war constitute a significant input, particularly for agricultural production processes. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of global energy price fluctuations on food prices in Turkey. It is anticipated that high exchange rate levels in Turkey amplify energy input costs, producing inflationary effects on food prices. The combination of rising exchange rates and global energy price increases is expected to lead to substantial increases in energy input costs for Turkey. This study tests whether increases in food prices in Turkey can be explained by fluctuations in energy prices. The analysis will employ the Quantile Autoregressive-Distributed Lag (QARDL) approach alongside causality testing to capture the dynamic and potentially asymmetric relationships between energy prices and food prices.
