Synopsis
Michael Chekhov, as an actor, director and educator, is one of the most important theatre figures of the 20th century, and with the acting technique named after him, he offers contemporary actors a new and dynamic method of acting. Having had the opportunity to work with Stanislavski for many years at the Moscow Art Theatre, Chekhov, although influenced in certain respects by the Stanislavski System, diverges from the “System” with his approach that highlights the actor’s creative individuality rather than his personality. The Chekhov Technique has brought a new approach to contemporary acting studies and has introduced many exercises that actors can practically experience. Chekhov believes that the actor must train the imagination in order to go beyond his or her everyday self and everyday conditions, and to discover his or her own creativity and uniqueness. In the Chekhov Technique, where creative imagination assumes a central role, Chekhov develops a distinctive terminology with many abstract tools and dynamic principles. This study, while addressing other elements of the technique such as atmosphere, psychological gesture, the feeling of ease-beauty-form-wholeness, the imaginary body, the imaginary center, and archetypes, will focus on the role of creative imagination in the technique; other elements will be considered mostly through their relation to creative imagination.
