Synopsis
Drawings not only serve as a tangible reflection of children's developmental processes, individual talents, and inner worlds, but also serve as a psychological relief tool. The study aimed to adapt the colors, lines, shapes, and patterns children develop during their pre-schematic (ages 4-7) and schematic (ages 7-9) stages of linear development into fabric designs, and to create clothing collections for girls and boys using these fabric designs.
Today, in children’s clothing, ready-to-wear products are often designed from an adult perspective and with stereotypical themes. This leads to the individual drawings created by children's imagination being overlooked and the emotional connection children form with their clothes being limited. This study demonstrates that seeing children's drawings on their own clothes can contribute to their self-confidence, creativity, and artistic awareness.
As part of the study, a story for children in their pre-schematic (ages 4-7) and schematic (ages 7-9) stages of linear development was prepared, accompanied by a pedagogue. To ensure that children can express the subject through drawing, a study was conducted at Gülen Yüzler Kindergarten in the Seyhan district of Adana for the pre-schematic stage (ages 4-7) and at Adnan Menderes Primary School for the schematic stage (ages 7-9). Student drawings were collected and analyzed, and the color, line, shape, pattern, and narrative quality in each drawing were evaluated. The findings were presented and interpreted using pie charts.
The study determined that children’s drawing skills are not only a form of aesthetic expression but also directly related to their cognitive and motor development. It can be said that the drawings produced parallel the characteristics of the children's developmental stages. In this context, the research revealed that children's drawings and paintings are a powerful resource for creating an aesthetic, creative, and emotional language in fashion and textile design; they also made significant contributions to the development of a child-centered design approach.
