Synopsis

Authenticity is a concept that has been continuously questioned in art and music philosophy, as its foundations lie in the idea of “human-specific creation.” Even the etymological roots of the word art point to conscious human production; therefore, the question of how “authentic” art truly is constitutes not only an aesthetic but also an existential issue. The debate on authenticity reminds us that music cannot be explained merely through technical accuracy or historical fidelity, but that human creativity and expressive power remain central to the depth of art.

Traditional definitions emphasize fidelity to the composer’s intention and the “correct performance.” Yet today, authenticity is increasingly validated within the relational experience among creator, work, and listener. It is shaped by the emotional connection listeners establish with music, the cultural context in which it is received, and the perceived sincerity of performance. The importance of the debate lies precisely here: what is authentic is not a fixed essence, but a continually reconstructed experience.

AI-generated music represents a contemporary case that sharpens the question of authenticity. Machine-produced works may be technically impressive, but it remains uncertain to what extent they carry the depth that stems from human experience and emotion. At the same time, collaborative creative practices between humans and machines are redefining the very source of authenticity. Looking forward, the criteria for authenticity may no longer be located in the distinction between human and machine, but rather in transparency, ethical disclosure, and the genuine relationship established with the listener.
