Synopsis

Governance processes in Erasmus student societies often rely on hierarchical and bureaucratic structures, which restrict international students’ opportunities to participate actively. Lack of transparency in decision-making, cultural and linguistic barriers, as well as spatial and temporal limitations, undermine inclusiveness and sustainability within these organizations. The Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) model, enabled by blockchain technology, offers an innovative alternative to these challenges. By operating through smart contracts, DAOs ensure that decisions are implemented automatically and transparently, thereby enhancing democratic participation and leveraging the collective intelligence derived from cultural diversity. This study discusses the adaptability of the DAO model to Erasmus student societies, emphasizing advantages such as transparent voting, equal participation rights, flexibility in time and place, sustainable engagement for short-term members, and the creation of a trustworthy environment. Furthermore, a phased transition scenario is proposed to demonstrate how DAO structures can be integrated into traditional organizations. Despite these advantages, several challenges remain significant, including limited technical knowledge, token-based power concentration, low participation rates, and the legal uncertainty surrounding DAOs. In conclusion, the DAO model should be regarded not merely as a technological innovation but as a transformative governance mechanism that reinforces participatory culture within student societies while enabling international students to take an active role in organizational decision-making.
