Synopsis

Virtual reality (VR) technology has recently brought a transformative shift in health sciences education and has become an increasingly adopted approach in dental education. In traditional training models, students practice on phantom heads or plastic teeth to develop fundamental psychomotor skills. However, these methods present several limitations, such as restricted repetition, high costs, and inadequate representation of real clinical scenarios. VR offers students an interactive, three-dimensional, and safe learning environment, enabling them to practice cavity preparation, caries removal, restorative, and endodontic procedures without risk. Particularly, simulators equipped with haptic feedback allow students to distinguish between different tissue hardness levels and receive immediate feedback on their errors during procedures. This not only supports the development of self-confidence but also contributes to improved clinical performance. Moreover, VR-based systems provide opportunities to objectively assess student performance through measurable parameters, thereby enhancing transparency and standardization in education. Nevertheless, challenges such as high costs, technical infrastructure requirements, limitations in haptic feedback, and integration into curricula hinder the widespread adoption of VR. In the future, with the integration of artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and advanced haptic technologies, VR is expected to evolve into a more comprehensive and effective educational tool. Therefore, VR should be regarded as a complementary approach in dental curricula, strategically integrated to enhance training quality while supporting the digital transformation of the dental profession.
