Synopsis

International migration is one of the main factors shaping the labour market. Return migration is a natural consequence of international migration. Although return migration is a relatively less interesting topic in the migration literature, studies in this field have been increasing in recent years. Economic-based reasons are generally emphasized in return migration studies. This study aims to reveal the relationship between return and employment in the context of economic-based migration theories through return programs for migrants in Spain. To achieve this aim, document analysis, one of the qualitative research techniques, was preferred. The study focuses on Spain, one of the member states of the European Union that most frequently participates in repatriation operations. The study is also important because Spain has implemented various repatriation programs in the recent past. The study concluded that it is supported that the migration theories discussed in the scope of the study do not explain the return programs in Spain, which these return programs ignore the vulnerable/disadvantaged situations of migrants, and that models that include reintegration should be developed in addition to financial support within the scope of return programs.
