Synopsis

Tradition is the cultural heritage of a society, passed down from time immemorial. While it may change over generations, tradition has remained inherently preserved and open to innovation. Continuity is crucial for the survival of tradition. Examining the tale discussed in tradition within the context of the teller, listener, place, and time of telling allows for a better understanding of the tale.

The research's source group consists of storytellers and storytelling ancestors living throughout Artvin. During fieldwork, the storytellers (458 individuals) were contacted through village headmen (muhtars), thus obtaining source individuals for the compilation. The majority of the 43 source individuals in the study were women. Most of the source individuals were reluctant to tell the tale they knew when the recording device was present and declined to be photographed. Most of the storytellers requested to listen to the recording, and any undesirable sections were requested to be removed. A total of 214 tales were collected from the field. After removing identical tales and those with flawed elements, 114 tales remained. Seventy of these tales are included in the study.

A compilation study was conducted in one hundred and seventeen villages out of three hundred and twenty in Artvin province. Due to the dispersed settlement and the migration of villagers to the city during the winter, it was not possible to visit every village. In Ardanuç, including the central neighborhoods, 18 villages were visited, 9 in Arhavi, 10 in Borçka, 8 in Hopa, 6 in Kemalpaşa, 11 in Murgul, 25 in Şavşat, and 30 in Yusufeli. The study was limited to a total of 117 villages. The individuals interviewed during the compilation are listed in the source person list. Care was taken to transcribe the tales on the day they were compiled. Fieldwork was conducted between December 10, 2020, and July 15, 2022.
