Synopsis

Charismatic leadership, distinct from traditional leadership theories, holds a significant position in the literature as a leadership model shaped by the leader’s personal characteristics, visionary orientation, and strong persuasive ability, enabling both organizational and societal transformation. Grounded in Max Weber’s sociological perspective, the concept is closely linked to strategic outcomes such as innovation, transformation, and sustainable success in contemporary organizational behavior literature. In times of uncertainty and crisis, charismatic leaders enhance organizational resilience by providing followers with hope, direction, and meaning, thereby fostering strong commitment to collective goals. In this context, the leader’s communication skills, passionate rhetoric, and capacity to develop a compelling vision reinforce followers’ emotional engagement and create a motivational synergy within the organization. However, this influence also entails certain risks. Followers’ unconditional loyalty may weaken critical thinking mechanisms, while the potential for legitimizing the leader’s personal interests may raise ethical concerns. Therefore, charismatic leadership represents not only a source of power and inspiration but also a dual-structured leadership style that must be managed with caution. In today’s world—characterized by rapid change, blurred boundaries, and increasing uncertainty—charismatic leaders serve as a compass, guiding the strategic direction of organizations and redefining their impact. In this chapter, charismatic leadership is examined from a comprehensive and multidimensional perspective, both as a powerful strategic advantage in organizational and societal contexts, and as a phenomenon that demands ethical scrutiny.
