Synopsis

This book adopts a holistic perspective to examine the impact of the digital age on family structures, integrating scientific evidence with lived experiences and human emotional dynamics. Employing a metaphorical framework that approaches the family as a physician would “take its pulse,” the work seeks to interpret the rhythm, strength, and occasional irregularities of the modern family. It offers a multidimensional analysis of the ways in which digitalization alters family rhythms, reshapes family dynamics during periods of crisis and stability, transforms intergenerational communication, and influences contemporary value systems.

The book provides an in-depth discussion of how technological developments redefine family bonds; the emerging risks and opportunities within parent–child relationships; phenomena such as screen addiction, social media cultures, digital identity construction, loneliness, shifts in privacy perceptions, and changes in empathic capacity. While highlighting the communication opportunities and new forms of social solidarity afforded by digital life, it also addresses challenges such as attentional fragmentation, relational distancing, and the weakening of emotional connections.

By weaving academic findings together with narratives of parents, children, spouses, and siblings, the book presents a narrative through which both experts and general readers can see aspects of their own lived realities. Case analyses, illustrations of digital addiction, practical explanations of communication breakdowns within families, and evidence-informed intervention strategies provide readers with comprehensive guidance. Moreover, topics such as the metamorphosis of moral values in digital environments, the migration of spiritual practices into online spaces, the role of social media in shaping collective behavior, disinformation processes, digital activism, and the relationship between digital culture and democracy are explored through an interdisciplinary lens.

The book also addresses future-oriented themes, including the evolution of family models, the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics into domestic life, potential family scenarios for 2050, technology-assisted parenting practices, and the balance between play and education in children’s daily routines. Case-based evaluations of digital dependency, intervention models, and recommendations for establishing technological balance further strengthen the practical relevance of the work.

The concluding section, titled “A Manifesto for Staying Human in the Digital Age,” underscores the importance of human connection, ethical balance, and familial solidarity, inviting readers to listen to and preserve the “pulse of the family” amid the complex tempo of modern life.

Prepared and published within the scope of the Family Year, this book serves as both an academic and practical reference for educators, psychologists, sociologists, family counselors, social workers, parents, young adults, and policymakers. It aims to empower families, uphold core values, and contribute to social well-being within today’s rapidly shifting digital ecosystem.
