Synopsis

This chapter examines the global evolution of beach volleyball, delving into its technical and tactical progression and its current state in Turkey from a multifaceted perspective. The sport's origins trace back to recreational activities along the coasts of Hawaii and California in the early 20th century. Professionalization began in the 1940s, and it was formally recognized as an official Olympic discipline at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. During this period, advances in field infrastructure and equipment design, along with athlete performance science and data-driven, AI-supported analysis tools, have enhanced the quality of the game and accelerated its spread. In Turkey, beach volleyball's popularity surged in the 1990s, coinciding with the nation's tourism boom, with destinations such as Antalya and Alanya assuming a pioneering role in this development. During the 2000s, the Turkish Volleyball Federation's strategic partnerships with the CEV and FIVB, the implementation of educational programs, and the proliferation of national organizations contributed to a significant enhancement in institutional capacity. However, structural impediments, including infrastructure imbalances, inadequate sponsorship, limitations in coach training, and athlete continuity, impede international competitiveness. The study uses a SWOT analysis to assess the current state of beach volleyball in Turkey, identifying its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It offers strategic recommendations for sustainable development to federations, local governments, and policymakers.
