Synopsis
The comprehensive and multidimensional transformation brought about by digitalization across various sectors is increasingly making its impact felt in the tourism sector and reshaping its operational dynamics. In this context, the tourism sector, while striving to achieve its economic development goals, must strike a delicate balance between protecting environmental values, preserving cultural heritage, and the increasingly important principles of sustainability. However, considering the current state of technological advancements, it is clear that such a dynamic process cannot be effectively managed solely through traditional planning approaches. One of the most striking innovations in this regard is digital twin technology. Digital twins, which create dynamic virtual copies of physical assets, environments, or systems, enable the processing of real-world data into a virtual model through the use of sensors, IoT devices, and imaging technologies, and the management of dynamic decision-making processes based on the information obtained from the virtual model.
This study, conducted from a conceptual perspective, evaluates digital twins as a critical and strategic transformation tool in sustainable tourism management. Digital twins can optimize many aspects of tourism destinations, from natural and cultural resources to visitor mobility, energy consumption, traffic flow, infrastructure systems, and waste management, all in line with sustainability principles. Digital twin technology not only increases the efficient use of resources, minimizes environmental impacts, and enhances visitor experiences, but also enables businesses to develop effective strategies by simulating scenarios of mass crises such as natural disasters, wars, and epidemics. In these respects, it stands out as an effective method for achieving and developing sustainable tourism goals.
